India Shines at 2024 Paralympics: A Record-Breaking Triumph in Paris

India achieved an unprecedented triumph at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, securing a record-breaking 29 medals—seven golds, nine silvers, and thirteen bronzes—vaulting them to 18th place in the overall rankings, a significant improvement from their 24th place finish in Tokyo 2020. This achievement not only underscores the nation's growing prowess in parasports but also marks a historical advancement for its para-athletes on the international stage.

The 84-member Indian team competed across 12 sports, reflecting an expanded interest and participation in parasports compared to the previous games. Notable performances included Sumit Antil, who not only defended his Paralympic title in the men's F64 javelin throw but also set a new world record with a 70.59-meter throw, solidifying his status as a global para-athletics icon. Another highlight was Avani Lekhara, who broke the world record in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1, becoming the first Indian woman to win two gold medals across Paralympics.

The games also saw emerging talents like 17-year-old Sheetal Devi, who became the youngest Indian medalist by securing a bronze in compound archery. This edition of the games was also notable for achievements in lesser-known sports like judo and intellectual impairment categories, broadening the scope of Indian parasports on the global stage.

The success in Paris is attributed to years of investments in training, infrastructure, and support systems spearheaded by organizations like the Paralympic Committee of India and the Sports Authority of India. These efforts have cultivated a fertile ground for nurturing elite para-athletes and have significantly contributed to the visibility and accessibility of parasports in India.

India’s stellar performance at the 2024 Paralympics is not just a reflection of the country's sporting capabilities but also a beacon of inspiration for future generations of athletes. This historic feat exemplifies how perseverance, dedication, and strategic support can transcend physical limitations and redefine what athletes with disabilities can achieve on the world stage.
